Description
1862 PATT $10 J-298 PCGS PR 65 BN
This is an interesting pattern using an early form of the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" that is now common to US Coins. The idea behind placing a reference to God on coins drew much support during the early days of the Civil War and would become standard practice a few years later. Patterns were struck with various forms of the motto. This coin, referenced in Judd/Pollack as J-289 is struck in bronze copper. The obverse is that of a regular $10 Liberty and the reverse is similar to a $10 Liberty but with the motto GOD OUR TRUST above the eagle.
The coin itself is pristine and of superb eye appeal. The surfaces are an even, glossy brown nearly devoid of marks. Only a small contact mark in front of Liberty's ear and a small spot in the right obverse field limit the grade. The coin is cataloged as an R-6, with 21-30 examples known. The latest Judd reference book places the population at 22 pieces total. PCGS has graded a total of 15 examples, including only 5 in this grade and just a single coin finer. An interesting piece that represents a transition in U.S. coinage that is still relevant today. |
